Electric Can Opener
The Electric Can Opener was Designed to
Save Time and Effort
Even though for over 150 years the mechanical can opener has done a perfectly good job of
opening cans of everything from bully beef to our favorite fruit pie filling it did not take modern man long to
look for a labor saving way to open a can. If you look in most kitchens in the modern world the one thing you can
almost guarantee you will find on the counter is an electric can opener.
In fact the very first electric can opener was introduced just in time for Christmas in 1931 and
housewives have been using them since. The advantages of modern electric can openers are numerous but by far the most appealing are the lack of effort need to
open the can and the speed with which they can open a can. It takes a fair amount of hand strength and effort to
use a mechanical can opener and the end result can often be a mess on the counter as the can tips and slips
while you are trying to get the can opener to work smoothly.
With electric can openers you simply place the can in position and push the lever down on top of
the can, the opener does the rest of the work with no mess and no fuss. The arm usually has a magnet that pulls the
cut lid out of the way and the specially designed blade leaves a smooth edge that will not cut your fingers. Plus
you can take the handle and blade assembly so that you can keep everything nice and clean.
Today there are some electric can openers such as the Kenwood
electric can opener that not only opens your cans , but has a built in knife sharpener in the back and a bottle
opener built into the front. This style of can opener usually has a built in safety switch that will turn the
opener of once it has completely cut the lid off, this switch also allow for one handed operation.
The latest innovation in can openers is the one touch can
opener. These are a battery can opener that you can simply place on top of the can and push a button to turn it
on. You do not have another thing as the can opener does all of the work for you. When the lid is completely cut
the can opener turns off and a magnet on the bottom lifts the lid when you remove the can opener. These can openers
are completely cordless can openers relying on a rechargeable battery
instead or in some of the smaller less expensive units a pair of disposable batteries.
Despite the fact that the market for food in metal cans seems to slowly be shrinking in favour
of cardboard boxes and aluiminium cans there race is still on to build a better way to open a can. One of the
latest innovations comes from decades of pop top beer and coke cans, many manufacturers are bypassing the need for
a can opener and making cans that the whole lids pulls off with a ring tab.
